Cold water fish - goldfish
Goldfish are a hardy species and probably the most popular children's pet in the world.
On the whole goldfish get along together very well and do better when in groups of three or more.
* Decomposing matter promotes nitrite
Cold water fish are voracious eaters and grow fast. Double (fancy) tail ones grow at a much slower rate and never reach the size that the single tail ones will. Though they know when to stop growing and never truly outgrow their tank they are all carp related and their natural size is quite large. The single tails will outgrow the fancy tails in no time at all. They will bully the smaller one, eat his portion of food and nip the fins or tail, till infection sets in and spreads through the whole tank. You are likely, then, to loose all your fish. Of course there are exceptions, but are you willing to take the chance?
* Uneaten food promotes algae growth
At times a problem may appear in cold water tanks where a fish will swim sideways or upside down. This is particularly common with fancy tails. It is a bladder disorder and you will help to avoid this by feeding these fish with food which sinks slowly and not floats. It has been suggested that these fish develop such problems when are trying to eat their food in a vertical position. If you are feeding flakes than swish the water and help the food sink a little.
* Observe for problems at feeding time
For tropical tank
Selection of tropical fish is such fun. There are hundreds of choices available in pet shops. For peaceful aquarium take care to select fish species which can live together in harmony. Take advantage of the pet shop staff's experience and ask questions. Discuss at length the choices available to you, sizes, colours, compatibility and care instructions for the fish you are getting. Your commitment may have to last for many years and you want it to give you happy results. Most preferred choice of aquatic pets is a community tank filled with several different types of compatible fish.
1_ Aggressive fish
Only compatible with their own species and will protect their territory by harassing, chasing and picking on other fish.
2_ Semi-agressive (lively)
Will live happily with other kind of fish but are aggressive towards their own species. They have been known to co-habit with aggressive fish, but those are exceptions to the rule. For peaceful aquarium mixing of the two species together is not recommended.
3_ Non-aggressive (peaceful)
Peaceful fish will co-exist with other fish. Among many the most popular within this category are mollies, swordtails, tetras, platties, danios, guppies, loaches and most catfish.
* Check if all equipment is working, daily
Snails are very beneficial and can probably be introduced to any tank. Just be sure to select a cold water snail for cold water and tropical snails for tropical tank to avoid losses.
